English for Computer Science – Book 2: Software is an intermediate English course for second-year university students (BAC2) of computer science and information technology. Written at CEFR level B1–B2, it takes learners into the world of software and develops the English they need to read technical texts, talk about programs and work effectively in a software team. Each of the eight units follows a clear plan. Students read an illustrated technical text written in the style of textbooks, user guides and professional documents, learn the key vocabulary with meanings and examples, and practise it through varied exercises: definition and synonym matching, word scrambles, gap filling, sentence scrambles, collocations and word families. Reading comprehension tasks include short-answer, true/false, yes/no and multiple-choice questions, followed by discussion and debate questions. Every unit also contains a grammar lesson with practice exercises, a practical skills section, a listening task, a pronunciation focus, speaking activities and writing tasks.Topics include:The world of software: system software, applications, licences and open sourceOperating systems and user interfacesInstalling software and managing files and backupsProductivity software, spreadsheets and databasesProgramming languages, compilers and interpretersAlgorithms, flowcharts and problem solvingThe software development life cycle, agile methods and teamworkSoftware testing, bug reports, open source and careers in softwareGrammar builds on the elementary level and focuses on the structures most useful for describing software: the present simple and continuous, noun compounds, the passive, instructions and phrasal verbs, relative clauses, comparatives and modal verbs, conditionals, the present perfect and future forms. The skills sections train students to write technical definitions, describe functions, write user guides, read code, formulas and SQL aloud, describe flowcharts, report progress in team meetings, write bug reports and prepare for job interviews. Two review units with group projects, a glossary of key terms, a list of abbreviations and a bank of useful phrases for technical communication complete the book. Many examples come from the students' own environment, such as local companies, mobile apps and university life, so that the language is relevant and memorable.A separate Teacher's Guide provides lesson plans, teaching notes, the complete answer key and the listening scripts.
