Gorl Dog

A CITY. A DOG. AND AN ATHESIT PONY. Gorl Dog is a smart lab-hound, used to a good life back home in the country. Her owners are small-time merchants who travel to exhibitions and fairs to sell their merchandize. On a haul to the Houston Livestock Show, they stop at a rest stop at the edge of town, and the dog gets lost. They have no choice but to go on without her. Thus, Gorl Dog becomes a stray who has three weeks to cross the enormous sprawl of a big industrial city to find her owners. But Gorl is no ordinary hound. She has inner debates, feelings, thoughts, philosophy, even morals in the face of danger. Over freeways, rivers, suburbs, railroad yards, slums, industrial parks, and the business district. There are dangers—a coyote pack, zooming trucks, men with guns, toxic waters, bad air, and cars and more cars.On the way, Gorl jumps a train, artists feed her, and she runs with wild dogs in the megalopolis. And city animals help—a talking goose, a giant ant, an atheist pony, a German shepherd who was once a city councilman, and Tina, her guardian dog angel. This is a fun read—a surreal adventure, heartfelt, satirical, darkly humorous, environmental, including tales within the tale. Originally a collaborative project shown in art galleries, the story features many color illustrations—pop art, gouache, linocuts, and drawings by three Houston artists.
