52 Sunsets is a deeply personal photography and reflection book created from love, loss, remembrance, faith, and the intentional choice to keep looking for beauty even during life's hardest seasons.
The idea for the book began after the loss of my sister, Michelle, who passed away at just 52 years old. In the first year following her death, I found myself drawn outside again and again at the end of the day. Life around me seemed to continue moving at full speed, even though my own world had changed completely. I needed quiet. I needed somewhere to breathe. And somehow, I kept finding that quiet in the evening sky.
I began photographing sunsets as a way to pause, reflect, remember, and simply be still for a few moments. Over time, the sunsets became more than photographs. They became reminders that even during grief, beauty could still exist. That hope and heartbreak could live in the same place. That life could feel incredibly heavy while the sky could still offer something breathtaking.
Because Michelle was 52 when she passed away, I chose one sunset to represent each week of the first year after her death: 52 weeks, 52 sunsets, one for each year of her life.
What began as a personal act of remembrance eventually became 52 Sunsets - A Whispers and Wings Collection.
The book pairs original sunset photography with short reflections centered on love, grief, remembrance, faith, hope, gratitude, and the beauty that can still be found after life changes. Each spread is intended to create a moment of pause for the reader rather than tell them how they should grieve or what they should feel.
52 Sunsets is not meant to be a traditional grief book or a step-by-step guide to healing. Grief is deeply personal, and no two people experience it in the same way. Instead, the book offers companionship. It gives the reader space to reflect, remember, breathe, and notice the small moments of beauty that can coexist with sadness, change, and uncertainty.
The book is also intentionally broader than grief alone. While it was born from loss, its themes can speak to anyone navigating a difficult season, major transition, caregiving journey, loneliness, recovery, change, or simply a time when life feels especially heavy.
At its heart, 52 Sunsets carries one central message: beauty does not erase pain, but pain does not erase beauty either.
The book became the first publication under my company, Whispers and Wings, a brand built around the idea of finding Beauty in the Overlooked. Sunsets, butterflies, quiet moments, handwritten words, unexpected kindness, memories, and acts of service all became part of the larger philosophy behind the brand.
My hope is that 52 Sunsets becomes the kind of book someone keeps on a coffee table, returns to during difficult moments, gives to someone they love, or reaches for when they do not quite have the words to say what they are feeling.
More than anything, I hope the reader closes the book feeling a little less alone and a little more willing to pause long enough to notice what is still beautiful.
52 Sunsets is a tribute to my sister, but it is also an invitation to anyone who has ever loved deeply, lost something important, or needed a reminder that even after life changes, beauty can still remain.
