This practice method is performed to pray for rain during prolonged droughts, or during solar and lunar eclipses. Because Mount Kōya is located high in the mountains, there have been many instances of rain-praying rituals performed there since ancient times. It is said that on July 18, 1313, at sunset, three monks-Johan (定範), Shinnichi (信日), and Kakuwa (覚和) -performed this practice, and heavy rain fell on the 23rd. It is also said that in June of 1398, Master Yukai (宥快) performed this ritual and brought rain.
When performing this ritual, everything-including the practitioner's robes, the cloth spread over the altar, and the flags-must be blue. In ancient Japan, the color we now call green was referred to as "blue."
