This book is a systematic, practical, and distinctive concise compendium of modern Chinese materia medica. It embodies the academic thought of "seven-in-one" modern materia medica, which includes: examining the historical evolution of the materia medica, distinguishing the original source and producing area, attending to collection and processing, authenticating the genuineness of the medicinal material, meticulously processing the prepared slices, evaluating quality, and clarifying clinical application.

The book consists of three parts: General Introduction, Specific Monographs, and Appendix. The General Introduction outlines the basic theories and development of Chinese materia medica. The Specific Monographs are arranged by therapeutic effect and feature 408 commonly used Chinese medicinals (including adjunctive medicinals) and 104 locally distinctive species from Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) region and Jiangxi Province. Each medicinal is described under the headings of name, source, botanical (or animal) morphology, producing area, collection and processing, medicinal material identification, chemical composition and pharmacological action, preparation of decoction pieces and their identification, nature and flavor and channel tropism, function, clinical applications, and explanatory notes. The book is richly illustrated with high-quality color photographs of the plants (or animals), medicinal materials, and prepared slices. The appendix includes comparative tables summarizing the efficacy characteristics of each medicinal, as well as an index of Chinese names and an index of scientific (Linnaean) names of the original sources.

本书为一部系统、实用且颇具特色的精编本草专著，蕴含了丰富的考、辨、采、鉴、炙、评、用（即考证本草沿革、辨别基原产地、讲究采收加工、鉴定药材真伪、精修炮制饮片、评价质量优劣、阐明临证用药）"七位一体"的现代本草学学术思想。全书包括总论、各论、附录三部分。总论概述了中药学的基本理论及发展。各论按功效分类，精选了408种常用中药（含附药）和104种江南地区和江西省地方特色品种。每品种按品名、来源、植（动）物形态、产地、采收加工、药材鉴别、化学成分及药理作用、饮片炮制及鉴别、性味与归经、功能、应用、论注等项叙述。全书植（动）物、药材、饮片等附有精美彩色照片。附录对各药功效特点进行归纳比较，并有药物中文名索引及基原拉丁学名索引。
