A company wrote environmental protection into its own charter, and then its shareholders voted the words out by twenty-six million votes to twenty-eight thousand.

In 2016 two founders, a footballer who had studied design and an engineer who could make things, launched one logo-less wool shoe on a promise that a business could do right by the world and still win. Within five years the shoe was the working uniform of the technology industry, the company was worth more than four billion dollars on its first afternoon as a public company, and the promise had been written into its incorporation documents as a binding legal purpose.

Five years after that, the footwear business sold for forty million dollars, roughly one percent of that peak, and the corporate shell was rented to the next boom as a graphics-processor leasing operation trading under the same ticker.

Allbirds: Unraveled is the account of how a mission became collateral. It follows the company from a wool research grant in New Zealand through a Kickstarter launched under a different name, an offering the regulator forced it to stop calling sustainable, a durability problem its own customers documented in public, a greenwashing suit, a securities suit, a store estate nobody could count accurately, and a turnaround plan whose priorities were rewritten while the company was still promising to reconnect with its product.

The argument underneath it is narrower and harder than a collapse story. Nothing here required fraud, and nobody was charged with anything. What it required was a sincere mission, growth capital that had to be repaid in growth, and a founding document that made the company's virtue legally binding and therefore, in the end, legally removable. When a business makes its conscience part of its constitution, it hands the world a measuring stick and its own shareholders a switch.

For readers who followed the direct-to-consumer decade, who wore the shoes, or who want to understand what actually happens when a mission meets a market, this is the whole of it.
