Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Winslow Homer, Bauer mit Heugabel, um 1880. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1832 als Sohn eines Pfarrers in der kleinen bäuerlichen Gemeinde Kvikne geboren, scheitert Bjřrnson 1849 an der Aufnahmeprüfung der Universität Oslo und betätigt sich als Literatur- und Theaterkritiker, wird 1857 Theaterdirektor in Bergen und schreibt mit »Synnove Solbakken« die erste seiner schnell weltberühmt werdenden Bauernerzählungen. Nach mehrjährigen Auslandsaufenthalten wird Bjřrnson 1863 Direktor des Christiania-Theaters und 1870 als Nachfolger Ibsens künstlerischer Direktor am Bergen-Theater in Oslo. 1903 erhält er den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Am 26. April 1910 stirbt Bjřrnstjerne Bjřrnson in Paris.
