Before the Birds

At 11:07 p.m., a professor returns home from a dinner party he has ruined.

The toast was to "our values." The emergency had a name-Gaza-but the toast did not use it. Nine minutes later, a close friend was looking at him not as a man who might be right or wrong, but as a man who might be unwell.

Now his wife is asleep upstairs, the kettle is empty, and one light is on in the kitchen. Before the birds begin, he intends to answer the question he could not answer at the table like a person.

What does a vote really select? Why do elected governments behave like tenants in their own buildings? How can power coordinate without a secret command room? Why do intelligent, decent people defend beliefs the evidence should undo? What happens to dissent when it is welcomed precisely because it costs nothing? And what are "our values" for when the institutions that proclaim them can redraw every category beneath them?

He follows the public record through elections, markets, courts, universities, newsrooms, platforms, emergency laws, colonial archives, loyalty oaths, and the ordinary software of institutional assent. But the files will not leave him outside the case. They return him to his parents, his profession, a student he failed, a colleague he did not defend, and the young woman whose question he turned into a performance:

Isn't that why people like us are here-to fix it from the inside?

As the window begins to gray, the night's argument changes. History's victories are no longer plaques on a wall but the remains of demands that people built the capacity to sustain. Refusal, he discovers, does not survive on courage alone. It survives on kitchens, ledgers, carpools, dues, legal work, repeated shifts-and people willing to return after the photograph has been taken.

Before morning arrives, explanation must become account. Knowledge must acquire a price.
