Den Anstoß gab das Befremden über die Diskrepanz zwischen dem großen Aufwand bei der Errichtung der berufsständischen Ordnung und dem sehr bescheidenen Ergebnis. Während in der geltenden Meistererzählung die autoritären Züge des Systems alles andere überlagern und dazu führen, die Rolle der Vertreter des Ständestaats als Widerstandskämpfer gegen den Nationalsozialismus zu unterschätzen, zeigt die Analyse des Denkens konservativer Zeitgenossen, dass der Beruf, den ein Mensch ausübt, diesen nicht ausmachen kann. Zugrunde liegt ein Politikverständnis, das nicht äußerlich Messbares, sondern menschliche Grundbefindlichkeiten in den Blick nimmt.
