Between Silence and Survival

Between Silence and Survival is a memoir of trauma, resilience, and the long, uneven journey of learning that survival is only the beginning of healing.

At thirty years old, Emily King looks back on a childhood shaped by abandonment, fear, and emotional control, piecing together memories that remain fractured by trauma. Through deeply reflective storytelling, she reconstructs the experiences that shaped her understanding of family, safety, and self-worth-and the years it took to unlearn the patterns that nearly defined her life.

Emily's earliest years are marked by betrayal when her father secretly builds a second life and abandons his wife and daughters, leaving Emily, her older sister Victoria, and their young mother, to rebuild alone. Seeking stability, her mother finds solace in music and begins a relationship with David, a charismatic musician whose arrival initially offers hope, warmth, and a fresh start.

But what begins as promise slowly reveals itself as coercive control.

David's behaviour shifts gradually from charm to emotional abuse, creating a household ruled by unpredictability, humiliation, and fear. Emily and Victoria learn to monitor footsteps, silences, and subtle changes in tone, becoming hyper-vigilant children forced to adapt to survive. Punishments become degrading and psychologically damaging, while their mother increasingly shrinks under David's control.

The breaking point comes when Emily's mother receives acceptance to university-a lifeline offering independence and possibility. After one final violent outburst, she makes the decision to leave, quietly gathering her children in the night and taking them away for good.

Escape, however, is only the beginning.

Relocating offers physical safety, but Emily discovers that trauma lingers long after danger has passed. As she adjusts to a quieter home, new school, and her mother's healthy relationship with Stewart, she struggles to trust stability. Hyper-vigilance, emotional withdrawal, and deeply ingrained survival instincts remain woven into her everyday life.

Writing becomes her first true act of self-expression, helping her begin to reclaim a voice shaped for years by silence.

Yet trauma's patterns continue into adulthood. Forced to leave home at sixteen, Emily enters a controlling relationship of her own and becomes a young mother at eighteen. Recognising familiar dynamics, she makes the painful decision to leave, breaking a cycle she now understands all too clearly.

Determined to create a different future, Emily rebuilds through education, motherhood, and work in healthcare. She attends university, works as a healthcare assistant, and begins to understand resilience not as endurance alone, but as the deliberate act of choosing differently.

When she meets her future partner, she is confronted with something she has never fully known steady, unconditional love. Through consistency, trust, and the shared raising of their son and daughter, Emily begins building a life founded not on fear, but on safety.

Now training to become a teacher, Emily reflects on what it means to break generational patterns-not through dramatic transformation, but through thousands of quiet decisions: leaving harmful environments, choosing healthy relationships, and creating for her children the safety she never knew herself.

At its heart, Between Silence and Survival is not simply a story about enduring abuse. It is about what comes after: the slow work of healing, the courage to rebuild, and the possibility of becoming more than the pain that shaped you.

It is a testament to the truth that survival may shape us, but it does not have to define us.
