Based on the author's personal observations and experiences, this book vividly portrays the everyday lives of ethnic minority communities in the Lijiang region. Set in Liangqiao Village in the river valley of Lijiang, Yunnan, it tells the story of He Yingjie and Li Runlian, a Naxi couple who live by the creed that "poverty need not mean a lack of ambition." From the early years of the People's Republic, through the socialist construction era, to the early stages of reform and opening-up, they threw themselves wholeheartedly into the production and development of Liangqiao Village, while overcoming immense financial hardships to send their children to school. After many twists and turns, their eldest son, He Yuan, managed to leave his hometown through education, while the other children also grew and matured in their own ways. Riding the currents of the times, the family persevered, strove for progress, and embraced new lives with hope and determination.

The stories in this book are vivid, engaging, and full of charm - infused with the earthy scent of the soil, the warmth of everyday life, the distinct character of Naxi culture, the bonds of human affection, and the beauty of rural landscapes.
