To gain eompetitive advantage, firms have inereased their number of variants in reeent years. But as a eonsequenee it has beeome more and more diffieult to foreeast demand data at the level ofindividual produets over the planning horizon. In the ease ofuncertain demand a hierarehical planning eoncept is partieularly appropriate. For the longer planning horizon an aggregate planning unit determines the aggregate production quan tities and the resouree requirements based on the demand data of product groups which can be predicted quite accurately. For the actual planning period, a detailed planning unit has to disaggregate the aggregate production quantity of each product group.
