By What Authority? - Complete Main Series contains all three narrative volumes in a single binding: The Argument in Brief, How Paul's Letters Were Edited, and The Chain from Scripture to Sovereignty - one continuous argument, from the textual tension inside Paul's letters to the legal architecture of colonial sovereignty.

The Tension

Most readers of the Bible have felt a tension they could not name. The God of conditional covenant and retribution is not the same figure as the one whose Father sends rain on the just and unjust alike. The tension is structural and most acute inside Paul's letters, where the Paul who writes that we were held in custody under the law and the Paul who writes that the law is holy and good use the same vocabulary in incompatible ways.

The Argument

Paul's letters were selectively edited in the second century. The added passages cluster around the same concerns: obey your masters, submit to governing authorities, go through the institution. Five independent lines of evidence converge on the same passages.

Marcionite absence. Marcion's second-century Apostolikon lacks the passages that sit most uneasily in Paul's theology. He wasn't proving a theory - he simply had an earlier text.

Stylometric anomaly. Mainstream scholars have flagged these passages on purely linguistic grounds: vocabulary and syntax diverging from Paul's attested style.

Structural rupture. The contested passages break argumentative flow. Remove them and the surrounding text reads more coherently.

Manuscript instability. Several passages appear in different positions across manuscripts or are absent from early witnesses - concentrated at precisely the passages flagged by other signals.

Institutional motive. Each addition is load-bearing for a specific project: church authority, submission to civil rulers, suppression of egalitarian tendencies.

The Three Volumes

The Argument in Brief (Vol. 1) presents the complete case in one sitting for general readers. No prior knowledge of Greek or church history required.

How Paul's Letters Were Edited (Vol. 2) is the full case: forty-nine chapters, letter-by-letter analysis, full scholarly apparatus, and sixteen responses to the strongest objections. Philemon is the null-hypothesis control - the one universally authenticated letter, which produces zero interpolation flags.

The Chain from Scripture to Sovereignty (Vol. 3) traces the consequence: from the papal bulls authorising dispossession - Dum Diversas (1452), Romanus Pontifex (1455), Inter Caetera (1493) - through the Doctrine of Discovery and Johnson v. M'Intosh (1823), to case law that enforces the architecture while declining to examine its foundations. Romans 13:1-7, absent from Marcion, is load-bearing throughout.

This Edition

All three volumes complete and unabridged. The verse-level dataset - 1,794 records - is freely available for independent analysis. Both this volume and the companion apparatus are free PDFs at the Internet Archive. Published under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. No institution. No publisher.
