This is just a story about a broken girl and the boy who shows her how to feel again-until it isn't. Set in the late 1800s, Emily Risdon lives in a world where women are expected to know their place-and stay in it. She returns to high society after several years at finishing school, still struggling with the loss of her mother, and finds herself thrown into a whirlwind of new emotions when the boy from the general store crosses societal boundaries to pursue her.

In the midst of regaining control over her feelings, Emily begins to discover that some of the women in Plattsburgh, New York, are harboring a secret that will alter the perception of power among her society's upper class-a secret they're keen to share with Emily, should she prove able to submit to their ideals. The only trouble is, there's a force far greater than power and control that's threatening to shatter the picture-perfect image Emily has worked so hard to create.

Her love for Andrew has hindered her ability to conform, and now she must hide behind a mask of lies in order to uncover truths that will transform her reality in ways that her fancy school never could have prepared her for.
