Der deutsche Naturforscher und Reiselitarat Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) unternahm 1829 auf die Einladung des Zaren Nikolaus I. hin seine zweite große Expedition in die Gebiete zwischen dem Ural und der chinesischen Grenze. Dort untersuchte er zusammen mit seinem wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter Land und Leute.§Die Ergebnisse seiner Studien liegen in zwei Bänden vor, in denen er detailliert Beschreibungen zu geografischen und historischen Gesichtpunkten mit natur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen vereint. Humboldt schuf so ein allumfassendes Bild Central-Asiens und gilt daher noch bis heute als Pionier auf diesem Gebiet. Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich um den zweiten Band dieses Werkes.
