He died fixing other people's locks. She woke up in someone else's body, in a world that grades souls like salvage and marks hers for deletion.

The railing gave way. The fall was final. Dane Pell knew the sound a finished thing makes, and that was it.

Then she came to face-down in a salvage field that stank of iron and rot, breathing through a stranger's lungs, staring at hands that were too small, too thin, and unmistakably not the ones she died with. She had been a man. She had been good at exactly one thing: naming the parts of a problem until the problem opened. Now she is a young woman in a dying town perched on the lip of a place where the ground simply stops and reality shimmers and crawls at the edges.
