Expecting to be shot down, he is instead joined in formation by the German pilot, who does not attack but leads him through an unreal experience.

As they fly together, the German plane transforms into a legendary red Fokker Dr I triplane, piloted by Manfred von Richthofen-the Red Baron of World War I fame. The narrator believes he is hallucinating or dead, but the experience he comes to realize is real. The Red Baron presents him with a "Luther Rose," a symbol of faith and salvation, identical to one from the narrator's family home. After this encounter with the supernatural, the narrator finds himself safely over England, able to land his crippled plane.

Back in the present, the narrator shares this story with his family for the first time, prompted by his granddaughter's question about his favorite Christmas story. The family's reactions range from awe to skepticism, especially from a dismissive boyfriend. The narrator reveals two never before seen photographs taken by his plane's camera: one of the Red Baron's triplane and another of the pilot himself.
