One of many intricately carved headstones in the South Burying Ground located in Sharon, New Hampshire belongs to Revolutionary War soldier James Smith. Only eighteen years old when he enlisted, Smith (1763-1844) served as a Private for three and half years in an infantry unit for the Continental Army.
His is one of 85 names listed on the town's Honor Roll of veterans. The Honor Roll plaque starts at the French and Indian War and ends at the Vietnam War.
With the names of the soldiers on the plaque and the wars they fought in as a backdrop, Citizen Soldiers and Their Stories from Sharon, New Hampshire's Honor Roll illustrates the lives of some local patriots before, during and after their military service.
