Marcus "Mackie" Doyle once believed boxing would save him.

For four years, he was one of Britain's rising professional fighters - a talented, hard-working boxer with a genuine chance of reaching the top. Then came the fight that should have changed his life. Mackie won it in the ring, but the judges gave the decision to his opponent. He knew it was fixed. So did the crowd. And, most importantly, so did the man standing opposite him.

Instead of accepting the result and keeping quiet, Mackie said what everyone else was too afraid to say. He called out the corruption live on television.

It was the beginning of the end.

His career disappeared almost overnight. Promoters stopped calling. His licence became impossible to renew. The people who had once promised him a future simply walked away. Mackie refused to compromise what little pride he had left, and eventually found himself fighting in the only places where nobody pretended the game was clean - barns, quarries, car parks and back rooms, where men fought for cash and there were no judges to buy.

Years later, Mackie is thirty-seven and living with his six-year-old son, Sam, in a battered caravan. His professional career is a distant memory. His body is damaged, his money is running out and debts to underground fight promoter Terry Vann are closing in.

Mackie tells himself every fight will be his last.

Then Vann offers him one final opportunity.

A fight big enough to clear his debts and secure Sam's future.

There is only one problem.

The man waiting for him is twice his size, has never been beaten and has left other fighters permanently damaged.

Mackie knows exactly what he is walking into.

But Sam doesn't know.

Meanwhile, Sam is growing old enough to notice the cracks.

And Mackie is running out of time.

On the night of the fight, surrounded by a crowd hungry for violence, the old fighter briefly returns. For a few unforgettable moments, the man who once stood beneath the bright lights is back - fast, intelligent and dangerous.
