Der schweizerische Dichter Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898) gehört vor allem mit seinen Novellen wie "Gustav Adolfs Page" oder dem Roman "Jürg Jenatsch" zu den bedeutendsten Realisten der deutschsprachigen Literatur; sein Gedicht "Der römische Brunnen", an dem er 20 Jahre arbeitete, gilt als das perfekte Gedicht schlechthin. Der ebenfalls aus der Schweiz stammende Literaturhistoriker Adolf Frey (1855-1920) untersucht in seiner Biografie Meyers Werk vor allem unter dem Aspekt von dessen schwerwiegenden und schließlich zerstörerischen psychischen Problemen.§Nachdruck der 1919 in Stuttgart und Berlin veröffentlichten dritten Auflage.
