Coriolan, Alexandre Hardy

Le Coriolan d'Alexandre Hardy (?-1632), dramaturge français prolifique et populaire, montre comment un poète français du début du XVIIe siècle pouvait concevoir une tragédie à partir d'un matériau historique.Cette pièce est aussi presque contemporaine du Coriolanus de Shakespeare (1608) qui utilise, comme elle, la Vie de Coriolan de Plutarque. Dans son introduction, Richard Hillman met en parallèle les deux tragédies et en étudie la relation intertextuelle.Fabien Cavaillé étudie la dramaturgie du Coriolan de Hardy en la replaçant dans l'oeuvre du poète et dans les conditions de représentation de son époque.The tragedy of Coriolan, by the enormously prolific and popular playwright Alexandre Hardy, offers an outstanding example of French tragic treatment of antique historical material in the baroque period.It also presents special interest as an intertext for Shakespeare's adaptation of essentially the same material (Plutarch's Life of Coriolanus), in Coriolanus (1608), which was probably closely contemporary, although the date of Hardy's work is less certain. Richard Hillman's introduction to his translation (the first in English) develops this perspective, while Fabien Cavaillé's introduction to his new edition of the French text provides a perspective on Hardy's impressive artistry in its theatrical context.
