Mit dem im Kloster Admont neu aufgefundenen Fragment des 'Abrogans' wird die Geschichte des ältesten deutschen Buches um ein faszinierendes Kapitel der Arbeit an der deutschen Sprache aus der Zeit Karls des Großen bereichert. Der am Anfang des 9. Jahrhunderts geschriebene 'Admonter Abrogans' alphabetisiert den Wortbestand eines lateinisch-deutschen Lexikons vollständig, modernisiert ihn sprachlich, bewahrt aber auch wichtige Eigenheiten des verlorenen Archetyps. Die Spuren, die sich durch die Untersuchungen des Fragments für seine Herkunft ergeben, führen in den Grenzbereich zwischen fränkischem und alemannischem Sprachgebiet und belegen, dass die produktive Weiterarbeit am 'Abrogans' schon früh zum Kern der Überlieferung gehört und nicht als sekundäres Zeugnis zu verstehen ist. Die kommentierte Edition und die philologische Einordnung des Fragments werden begleitet von Einzelstudien sowie einer paläographischen Untersuchung, die die gesamte Überlieferung des 'Abrogans' mit einbezieht.
