Friedrich Schleiermacher zählt zu den bedeutendsten Pädagogen und Theologen des 19. Jahrhunderts. In diesem Buch wird sein Bildungsverständnis vor dem Hintergrund seiner romantischen Schriften analysiert, wobei Individualität und Religion als Bildungsziel bzw. Bildungsmedium eine besondere Rolle spielen. Das zentrale Spannungsverhältnis von Selbstwerdung und Vergesellschaftung wird im Hinblick auf die Grenzen der Erziehung untersucht. Der besondere Ansatz dieser Arbeit liegt in dem Nachweis, dass romantische Impulse auch Schleiermachers spätere Arbeiten noch bestimmt haben, was zu einem um persönlichkeitsethische Motive erweiterten Verständnis der Pädagogik Schleiermachers führt.
