Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783 - 1872) war ein dänischer Theologe, Dichter und Pädagoge. Er hat bedeutenden Einfluss auf die deutsche Erwachsenenbildung in ihrem Konstituierungsprozess genommen und ist geistiger Begründer der Heimvolkshochschulen. Dennoch sind Grundtvig und die grundtvigsche Volkshochschulidee außerhalb Dänemarks bis heute kaum bekannt und beachtet. Die Autorin Anke Rikowski-Bertsch stellt sich daher in einer historischen Zugangsweise der Herausforderung, die grundtvigsche Volkshochschule in Bezug auf ihre originäre Idee, ihre institutionelle Umsetzung und ihre Rezeption für die Erwachsenenbildung systematisch aufzuarbeiten. Der Leserschaft soll dadurch ein grundlegender Zugang zu Grundtvig und zu seiner Volksbildungsidee ermöglicht werden: Anliegen ist es, den Volksbildner Grundtvig wieder mehr in das Blickfeld erwachsenenpädagogischer Diskussion zu rücken, Impulse zur weiteren Auseinandersetzung mit seinem pädagogischen Werk zu geben und seine Ideen als Ressourcen zur Bewältigung gegenwärtiger gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen heranzuziehen.
