Der Forschungsschwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Sprache als Inszenierungsmedium, untersucht am Beispiel des Autors Thomas Bernhard. Der Ansatzpunkt liegt in der Feststellung, dass der Autor Bernhard nur als selbstkonstruierte Kunstfigur wahrnehmbar ist. Vieldiskutiert ist das Problem der verwischenden Grenze von Realität und Fiktion in den Werken des Autors. Bernhard ging den Weg des Autors, konstruierte für sich eine Sprache, aus der heraus er alles schöpfte, eine eigene Geisteswelt schuf. In allen seinen Lebensbereichen inszeniert sich der Autor durch seine unverwechselbare Sprache selbst. Anhand eines theoretischen Dreischritts wird der Weg von Bernhards konstruierter Kunstfigur des Autors von der fiktiven Bühne hin zur öffentlichen Bühne nachgezeichnet und dabei werden die Methoden der Inszenierung für jedes angesprochene Medium (Theater, Fernsehen, Autorenrede) untersucht. Beim Autor Bernhard ist alles Sprache, nichts weiter als die Inszenierung eines Selbst.
