In seinen berühmten Novellen hat Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) immer wieder das Thema der gefährlichen Erotik aufgegriffen, so auch in "Die Venus von Ille", neben "Carmen" seine bekannteste Erzählung: Als Alphonse gedankenlos den Brautring seiner Verlobten an den Finger einer ausgegrabenen, seltsam bedrohlichen Venusstatue aus der Römerzeit steckt, beschwört er eine Katastrophe herauf, denn die Statue weigert sich, den Ring wieder herauszugeben. Offenbar hält sie sich für den wahren Verlobten des jungen Mannes und erscheint bereits in der Hochzeitsnacht, um ihr Recht einzufordern.
