Dilli Wale

Shahid Ahmad Dehlvi (1906-1967) remains one of Urdu's most cherished prose stylists, celebrated for his evocative writings on Delhi's language, culture, and vanishing world. Born in Delhi on 22 May 1906, he was the grandson of Deputy Nazir Ahmad and inherited a deep literary sensibility. In 1930, he launched the influential monthly Saqi from Delhi, later continuing its publication from Karachi after Partition, where it became a beacon for preserving Shahjahanabad's cultural heritage. A trained musician associated with Radio Pakistan, Dehlvi also wrote witty caricatures and poignant essays on Delhi's social life, music, and the trauma of 1947. His major works include Dehli ki Bipta, Ujra Dayar, Ganjaneea-e-Gauhar, Bazme Hamnafasan, and Taq-e-Nisian. This volume, compiled by Aijaz Ubaid, brings together a selection of his finest essays and sketches, offering readers a vivid glimpse into the cultural memory of a city that once stood as a symbol of Indo-Muslim civilization.

شاہد احمد دہلوی اردو کے ان ممتاز نثر نگاروں میں شمار ہوتے ہیں جنہوں نے دہلی کی زبان، تہذیب اور اجڑتے ہوئے عالم کو اپنی تحریروں میں زندہ کیا۔ دہلی میں پیدا ہونے والے شاہد احمد، نذیر احمد دہلوی کے پوتے تھے۔ 1930 میں انہوں نے دہلی سے ماہنامہ ساقی جاری کیا جو بعد میں کراچی منتقل ہوا اور شاہجہان آباد کی ثقافتی میراث کے تحفظ کا ذریعہ بنا۔ ریڈیو پاکستان سے وابستہ ایک ماہر موسیقار بھی تھے۔ انہوں نے دہلی کے سماجی و ثقافتی پہلوؤں، موسیقی اور 1947 کے المیے پر دلگیر مضامین اور خاکے لکھے۔ دہلی کی بپتا، اجڑا دیار، گنجینہ گوہر، بزمِ ہم نفساں اور طاقِ نسیاں ان کی اہم کتابیں ہیں۔ اعجاز عبید کی مرتب کردہ یہ کتاب ان کے بہترین مضامین و خاکوں کا انتخاب پیش کرتی ہے جو دہلی کی ثقافتی یادوں کا آئینہ دار ہے۔
