This book may be considered a 'novel of ideas' in that it explores issues surrounding faith (or, more properly loss of faith), atheism, and the problem of finding meaning in an apparently meaningless universe. The two protagonists are a young, carefree woman (Evie Maltravers) and a tortured sixty-one year old Church of England rector (Charles Wade). Wade has been rector of Bardisham in Kent for thirty-five years. His faith has gradually ebbed away, his marriage is a charade, and he has lost all sense of purpose. Following a chance meeting with Evie, he embarks upon an intellectually stimulating though physically unsettling relationship which incurs the opposition and the suspicion of all those around them. Ultimately, though, this unlikely friendship - in the most unexpected way - enables Wade to rediscover a reason for living.
The book is a moving portrayal of love, loss and reconciliation.
