The purpose of this book is to educate the international aviation community about the feasibility of computer-based instruction to enhance or replace current technical and pilot safety training programs, including Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM). It combines several academic perspectives including aviation human factors, instructional design and theory, cognitive psychology, and e-learning project management. Whereas traditional classroom instruction requires pilots to be pulled 'off the line', a training facility to be maintained and instructors to be compensated, computer-based instruction is, comparably, extremely cost-effective. It can be completed from any location with internet access at any time of day, learning can be distributed throughout the year (allowing recurrent training to be completed monthly rather than yearly), curriculum and delivery is standardized, learning is interactive, performance can be tracked through interactive quizzes and exams, and the cost is very much more affordable. As with classroom instruction, there is naturally a wide range in quality of computer-based training. Quality ranges from boring and monotonous electronic text documents to interactive instruction enhanced with visual examples and quizzes. "e-Learning in Aviation" provides the industry with guidelines for the design and integration of effective computer-based training.
