Der Spätaufklärer und Klassizist Fernow (1763-1808) will autonome Kunst in der Nachfolge von Winckelmann und Mengs vom Eigenwert des signifikativen Materials her bestimmen. Im engeren Umkreis der Weimarer Kunstfreunde Goethe und Meyer und mit Blick auf Autoren wie Schelling und Friedrich Schlegel konzipiert Fernow einen Klassizismus, der nicht nur kunsthistorisch fundiert ist, sondern zugleich produktionsästhetisch argumentiert. Die Konsequenzen dieser Abkehr von einem mimetischen Kunstverständnis werden anhand der Leitbegriffe untersucht, die Fernows Schriften über die Werke der zeitgenössischen Künstler Carstens und Canova, also seinen zentralen ästhetischen Beiträgen zur Malerei und zur Bildhauerkunst, zugrundeliegen.
