Gotthold Ephraim Lessing veröffentlichte seine in drei Bücher gegliederten "Fabeln" zusammen mit den literaturhistorischen "Abhandlungen mit dieser Dichtungsart verwandten Inhalts" - so der Originaltitel - im Jahr 1759. Lessing reagierte damit auf die Fabel-Begeisterung der Epoche sowie auf erste Versuche zur theoretischen Durchdringung des Genres, etwa von Gottsched. Bei den in Prosa und Gedichtform verfassten Fabeln griff Lessing immer wieder auf Vorlagen der antiken Dichter Aesop, Phaedrus und Aelianus sowie die Versfabeln von La Fontaine zurück, die er jedoch in meisterhafter Form sprachlich verdichtete und im Sinne einer aufklärerischen Moral neu ausrichtete.
