Forgiving Lokelani

Unwilling to live the life expected of her - to take over her parents' local convenience store in Hāna and marry her high school sweetheart Noa - Lokelani disappeared twenty years ago and staged her own death. She had just married Noa but fell in love with a woman from New York; something else she couldn't share with her conservative parents.
Noa, in the meantime a successful author and back on Maui, has been researching Lokelani's whereabouts for her mother Iwa and found proof that she is still alive. Noa's editor has a lead on her in New York. Noa and his girlfriend Maile travel to the Big Apple to find her.
What she did in the past weighs heavily on Lokelani and she can't face the residents of Hāna, especially her mother. However, when Lokelani's daughter Jules disappears after her high school graduation party and has obviously flown to Hāna on her own, Lokelani and her partner Kim are forced to travel to Maui as well to track her down.
Jules, in the meantime, has met her great-grandmother Ana and grandmother Iwa and is trying to become fully immersed in local culture and events. Will Jules be accepted by her family? Will the residents of Hāna adhere to the Hawaiian traditional practice of reconciliation and forgiveness, hoʻoponopono - or will hard feelings ruin the reunion?
