Franz Schubert galt als bescheidener Musiker des Bürgertums; sein Genie verbarg er vor der Öffentlichkeit. Nur wenige seiner Lieder wurden aufgeführt, der Großteil seiner Werke fand erst lange nach seinem Tod öffentliche Beachtung. Der österreichische Musikhistoriker Paul Stefan verfasste 1928 diese Biografie über einen der größten Komponisten Österreichs "aus sehnsüchtigster Liebe" rund einhundert Jahre nach Schuberts Tod. Neben Hintergründen und zahlreichen Abbildungen finden sich hier auch originale Handschrift- und Notenproben.
