Der Schriftsteller und Germanist Friedrich Gundolf (1880 1931) gehörte seit 1899 zum engsten Kreis um den Dichter Stefan George, 1923 zerbrach die Beziehung. Gundolfs Buch über George erschien erstmals 1920, als das Verhältnis zwischen den beiden Männern bereits angespannt war. In der Weimarer Republik erlebten Gundolfs Arbeiten etwa über Goethe, Kleist und Shakespeare zahlreiche Auflagen, 1930 wurde er mit dem Lessing-Preis ausgezeichnet. 1964 stiftete die Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung den bis heute jährlich vergebenen Friedrich-Gundolf-Preis für die Vermittlung deutscher Kultur im außeruniversitären Bereich.§Nachdruck der Erstausgabe 1920 in Berlin.
