The present compilation is a commented overview of post-1945public opinion surveys in Germany, focused on contents, regularityand availability ofthe surveys. The compilation breaks down intoseven chapters. Following the introduction on the use of publicopinion surveys in social science research, the presentationfollows a chronological structure, starting with public opinionpolls in early post-war Germany. The overview proceeds with achapter on public opinion surveys in the former GDR, and a chapteron political science and elections studies in the FRG. Thereafter,a number of public opinion surveys in unified Germany arepresented. The last empirical chapter deals with cross-nationalpublic opinion barometers in which Germany, Austria and Switzerlandparticipate. The overview concludes with a discussion about themerits and shortcomings as well as the contents of the differentpublic opinion surveys conducted in Germany.
