1990 erwarb die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek für ca. zwei Millionen DM eine kleinformatige Weltkarte des Gelehrten Martin Waldseemüller aus dem Jahr 1507. Dieser "Taufschein Amerikas" benannte zum ersten Mal den neuentdeckten Kontinent. Die Herkunft dieser Karte, eingebunden in eine Inkunabel von 1486, war durch eine Reihe von bekannten Vorbesitzern sehr gut belegt. 2017 sollte ein weiteres, erst seit Kurzem bekanntes Exemplar dieser Karte versteigert werden. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass es sich sowohl bei der Karte der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek als auch bei dem Neufund um Fälschungen handelt.Die Umstände, die zur Anfertigung dieser Fälschung führten, werden in diesem Band erstmals aufgearbeitet. Aktenfunde und materialwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen ergeben ein vollkommen neues Bild. Die Spur dieser trickreichen Herstellung führt in die 1950er-Jahre. Die Motive der Fälscher sind allzu menschlich - und werfen ein Schlaglicht auf den internationalen Kunsthandel. Spannender als jeder Krimi!
