Dieser legendäre Satz von Kanonikus Michael Gamper bildet das Leitmotiv für die vorliegenden "Streifzüge" durch die Geschichte Südtirols im 20. Jahrhundert. Es sind Jahrzehnte, zunächst des erbitterten Abwehrkampfes gegen die faschistische Unterdrückungs- und Erdrückungspolitik und dann des leidenschaftlichen Ringens um eine echte Landesautonomie, nachdem den Südtirolern 1919 und 1946 das Selbstbestimmungsrecht verweigert worden ist. Der Autor spannt - in lockerem Erzählton - den Bogen vom Schwenk Italiens im Jahr 1915 über Faschismus und Option (1939), Pariser Vertrag (1946), die Kundgebung von Sigmundskron (1957) und den "Tag von Meran" (1969) bis über die Jahrhundertwende hinaus.
