Das vorliegende Buch bietet eine fachübergreifende, studentenorientierte Einführung in den Fragenkreis der Normativität und führt damit die weitgehend unverbundenen Fachdiskurse von Historikern, Juristen, Theologen und Philosophen zusammen. Dabei wollen die hier versammelten dreizehn Vorlesungen auch einen Überblick über die Kernprobleme der gegenwärtigen Debatten vermitteln. Die Beiträge sind in einen historisch-deskriptiven sowie einen systematischen, normativ angelegten Teil gegliedert. Die ersten acht Vorlesungen beschäftigen sich mit der Genese von Normativität. Im historischen Zugriff behandeln sie die spezifischen Normativitätsvorstellungen vergangener Epochen, vom alten Israel über das europäische und islamische Mittelalter bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. Im zweiten Teil geht es in fünf Vorlesungen aus systematischer Perspektive um die Begründung bzw. Geltung von rechtlichen und moralischen Geboten sowie theologischen Glaubenssätzen unter den Bedingungen moderner Gesellschaften.
