Does Christianity still make itself heard? If so, what do Christians have to say about their faith? The problematic new starts and the instructive declines of missionary work and apologetics in the 19th and 20th centuries are presented. After a long silence on the part of academia and the church leadership they experienced a renaissance at the turn of the millennium, which is analysed as a linguistic phenomenon. The focus lies on the linguistic wars surrounding the Christian perception of the world and the verbal discrimination of those addressed by missionary work and apologetics. A look at the effect that specific terms have had shows the problematic, but above all the positive potential of human language. A more precise and more appealing choice of words corresponding to the freedom of the Gospel is advocated. To this end, the subjects missionary science and practical theology, particularly homiletics, which are far apart, can draw closer together again and have a mutually stimulating effect.
