Kläger war Johannes Fust, der den Druck einer Bibel finanziert hatte, der 'Gutenberg-Bibel', die von vielen als das schönste jemals gedruckte Buch angesehen wird. Gutenberg wurde auf Rückzahlung einer sehr hohen Summe verklagt. Gefragt wird, welche Punkte zwischen den Parteien umstritten waren und wie das Gericht jeweils entschieden hat. Die häufig vertretene Auffassung, zur Zeit des Urteils sei Gutenberg zahlungsunfähig gewesen und durch die Entscheidung ins Elend gestürzt worden, wird abgelehnt. Die Arbeit gibt detaillierten Einblick in einen Mainzer Zivilprozess um die Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts am Vorabend der Rezeption.
