Tolstoi veröffentlichte "Herr und Knecht", eine seiner bekanntesten Erzählungen, im Jahr 1895: Der Knecht Nikita und sein wohlhabender Herr Wassili Andrejewitsch Brechunov geraten bei der Fahrt zu einem Grundstückskauf mitten in der Steppe in einen schweren Schneesturm. Vom Weg abgekommen drohen beide zu erfrieren, eine existenzielle Bedrohung, die die unüberbrückbaren Standesunterschiede zwischen beiden schließlich einebnet. "Der Schneesturm", 1886 erschienen, hat dieselbe Ausgangssituation: Der Icherzähler und sein Fuhrknecht Aljoschka sind in der Steppe unterwegs und verirren sich im Schneesturm. Dem Kältetod nahe versinkt der Erzähler in einen delirierenden Traum.
