At the heart of the story is Timothy Hackworth, the Darlington-born engineer whose work helped turn the early railway experiment into something capable of becoming a working system. Around him were the engineers, mechanics, labourers and communities who made the railway age possible.

The book explores the places where that history happened - the railway works, stations, streets, bridges and industrial sites - as well as the people whose lives were shaped by them.

It is also a story of change.

Industries rose and disappeared. Railway works expanded and eventually closed. Buildings changed their purpose. Communities adapted. Yet the town continued to evolve, carrying traces of its industrial past into the present.
