The system was never low on refrigerant. The filter was plugged.

And you added a pound anyway, because the gauges said low. Three weeks
later you were back on that roof, for free, and the customer was not
smiling.

You have done this. Everybody has done this.

Technicians do not fail because they do not know the theory. They fail
because they stand in front of a unit that is not working and they do not
know what to measure first. So they reach for what they know how to
replace. A capacitor. A contactor. A pound of refrigerant.

This is not a textbook. It is a decision tree.

It answers one question, over and over: the unit is doing this. What
do I measure, in what order, and what does each reading rule in or
out?

Airflow. Metering device. Superheat. Subcooling. Amps. In that order,
every call, for the rest of your career.

Two numbers. Five diagnoses. And the high-and-high corner that gets
misread as an overcharge, right before somebody recovers refrigerant out
of a system that was never overcharged.

• 30 worked service calls. You get what the customer said and you
  get the readings. Then you stop, you commit to an answer, and you turn the
  page. Nine of the ten have a trap in them.


• Symptom playbooks. Not cooling. Not heating. Freezing up. Short
  cycling. Will not start. Noisy. Water where it should not be.

  the double purge. And the two-column chart that will make your subcooling
