Der vorliegende Band zum Thema »Theorie der Nutzerrollen« ist der vierte und abschließende Band der Reihe »Interaktive Medien und ihre Nutzer«, welche die Ergebnisse des Teilprojekts »Interaktive Mediennutzung« des Sonderforschungsbereichs 240 »Bildschirmmedien« zusammenfasst. Die technische Möglichkeit zur Gestaltung von Medieninhalten durch den Nutzer führt zu einer Aufweichung des klassischen Sender-Empfänger-Schemas, dem die Wissenschaft mit neuen Beschreibungsmodellen und der Frage nach der »Nutzerfreundlichkeit« (»Usability«) Rechnung zu tragen hat. Im ersten Teil wird eine Theorie der »Digitalen Plattform« als eine Theorie der Nutzungsformen des Digitalmediums formuliert. Der zweite Teil prüft das theoretisch eingeführte Konzept der »Usability« aus Sicht der Praxis, beschreibt die neuen interaktiven Kommunikationsarchitekturen im Umfeld ökonomischer Prozesse und kommt von hier aus zu einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der Theorien der Nutzerrollen. Der dritte Teil geht aus vom »Nutzer«, wie er im Netz eingeschrieben und bildlich repräsentiert ist. Aus dem Inhalt: Digitale Plattform. - User Families. Von der "Gesellschaft des Geistes' zu einer Typologie der Nutzer interaktiver Mediensysteme. Wege durchs Web. Informationsarchitektur und Usability im WWW. - Interaktive Kommunikationsarchitekturen: Wissensmanagement im Umfeld ökonomischer Prozesse. - Theorien der Nutzerrollen. - Weltenbilder. - Internet-Emblemata.
