In The Story of Roger Hardfoot, we leave young Roger finally feeling safe after his long trek across the mountains. He has found solace with his unknown relative on her wilderness farm. The story then continues from the point of view of old Jeb, the fur trapper and mountain man. Over the next ten years, sad and life threatening events befall him, with the one bright light -the birth of his son. However, Jeb is forced to give his son to the boy's Indian grandmother to raise. What fate befalls the young lad? Will Jeb ever reunite with him? Will he ever see Roger again?

In the meantime, Roger has more than his share of adventure with two romances, life-threatening range wars, and reuniting with friends, both old and new. He has managed to attend agricultural college back East. But, on the death of his Gran's foreman, must come back to help run the farm. His seven evil brothers reappear. He buys more land and expands the farm. He goes out with Betsy, the young school mistress, but is somewhat shocked when his brother Carrie comes home. An established lawyer back East, Carrie decides to move West again and vies for Betsy's hand. A range war ensues when an evil English Lord, tries to take over Roger and Elizabeth's land. Will Roger ever marry? Will he beat the evil range lord and save his (and his neighbors') land? Will Jeb McLeod enter his life again?
