Josef Bayer kam am 3. Mai 1847 in Plan, dem heutigen§Planá zur Welt. Am 21.November 1880 wurde§Josef Bayer zum Professor der Veterinärchirurgie mit§Operationslehre ernannt. Sein Interesse galt in§besonderem Maße der Antisepsis und der§Veterinärophthalmologie, als deren Begründer an der§Wiener Schule er bezeichnet werden kann.§Im Rahmen seiner Tätigkeit veröffentlichte Josef§Bayer zahlreiche wissenschaftliche§Artikel und Bücher. Zu den bedeutendsten zählte die§Bildliche Darstellung des gesunden und kranken Auges§unserer Hausthiere, sowie das gemeinsam mit Eugen§Fröhner herausgegebene Handbuch der thierärztlichen§Chirurgie und Geburtshilfe, wobei Josef Bayer für die§Bände Operationslehre und Augenheilkunde auch als§Autor verantwortlich war. Im Jahre 1892 wurde Josef§Bayer zum Studiendirektor des k. u. k. Militär-§Thierarznei-Institutes ernannt, das er in einer für§die Anstaltsgeschichte besonders bedeutenden Periode§leitete. Unter seiner Leitung wurde das§Militär-Thierarznei-Institut im Jahre 1897 zur§Hochschule erhoben und Josef Bayer im Zuge dessen der§1. Rektor der tierärztlichen Hochschule in Wien.
