Der Begründer einer der großen ethischen Konzeptionen der Menschheit gilt dabei als ordnungsfrommer Tugendlehrer und Apologet der Anpassung. Gegen dieses Klischee wendet sich dieses Buch. Der Autor rekonstruiert anhand eigener Übersetzungen die Grundstruktur der Ethik des Konfuzius mit dem Ergebns: Bei aller Betonung von Tradition und Gesellschaft beruht seine Ehtik auf dem Gedanken des "Selbst" und der Autonomie - eine Analogie zum westlichen Denken, so daß die Kompatibilität der Wertsysteme doch größer zu sein scheint, als allgemein angenommen wird.
