Kindern gelingt der Erwerb einer Zweitsprache im Allgemeinen besser als jugendlichen oder erwachsenen Lernern. Wie ist dieser «Altersunterschied» erklärbar? Seit Lenneberg (1967) dominiert eine neurobiologische Annahme das Forschungsfeld: Mit dem Eintritt in die Pubertät verliere das Gehirn aufgrund eines biologischen Reifeprozesses seine ursprüngliche Plastizität, sprachliche Informationen könnten dann nicht mehr mit der gleichen Effizienz verarbeitet werden (Critical Period Hypothesis). Diese Arbeit überprüft die Plausibilität dieser Hypothese und sammelt anhand zweier Fallbeispiele Indizien für einen alternativen Erklärungsansatz zum Altersfaktor, in dessen Mittelpunkt die altersspezifische Bereitschaft des Lerners zur sprachlichen Assimilation steht.
