Traditional backup methods in a home or small office§environment are complex and insecure. They allow§modification of the data without§the knowledge of the owner unless additional steps§are taken to secure a hash of the media.§Additionally, if a backup is tampered with there is§no way to revert to the non-tampered with state of§the backup unless additional work has also gone into§creating multiple backups, and then there is the§additional problem of verifying all of the backups§periodically. To solve these problems, we developed§Ladon, a framework for distributed backups. Ladon§operates in a peer-to-peer fashion and assumes§malicious remote peers. Ladon''s purpose is to§securely store data across a heterogeneous§environment of networked desktop computers. Ladon§uses algebraic signatures to allow third parties to§verify data without possessing a copy of the data,§which prevents malicious peers from destabilizing the§system. We have designed our system for use in medium§bandwidth environments such as home broadband DSL or§cable.
