LET THEM IN: The Black-Eyed Children of Eureka Springs

In the mist-shrouded hills of Eureka Springs, Arkansas-a Victorian jewel of the Ozarks long whispered to be one of America's most haunted towns-something far older and colder than local ghosts has begun to knock.

Sarah Brennan arrives seeking quiet. After a painful divorce and the slow unraveling of her old life, she rents a weathered hillside cottage just beyond the glowing lights of the Crescent Hotel and the winding streets of downtown. The healing springs, the quirky shops, the layered history of miracle cures and tragic losses all promise a soft landing. For a few weeks the town delivers: crisp autumn air, the scent of woodsmoke, the distant chime of church bells. Then the first knock comes after midnight.

They stand on her porch in the rain-two children, no more than ten or twelve, pale-skinned and oddly formal in outdated clothes. Their voices are flat, almost polite. "Please let us in. We only need to use the phone. Our parents will come soon." Sarah almost opens the door. Something in their stillness stops her. When the porch light catches their faces, she sees the eyes: solid, bottomless black, no white, no iris, only void. The children do not smile. They do not blink. They simply wait.

Across Eureka Springs the pattern repeats. A late-night clerk at a Basin Park shop. A couple staying in a historic inn. A lonely widow near the old springs. Always the same request. Always the same eyes. Always the same growing pressure to open the door, as if some invisible force is already leaning against the threshold. Those who refuse report crushing dread, nausea, and the sense that something has marked them. Those who answer the knock are never quite the same-if they are seen again at all.

As more sightings surface and the town's famous haunted reputation begins to feel like a thin cover for something far darker, Sarah is pulled into a quiet, desperate investigation. Local historians speak of older stories that never made the tourist brochures. A retired deputy remembers a case that was buried. An eccentric collector of Ozark folklore insists the black-eyed children have been here before, drawn to the limestone veins and the sacred waters that once belonged to people who understood thresholds must never be crossed lightly.

What do they want? Why this town, with its wounded history of false healers, lost children, and restless dead? And what happens when the invitations finally begin to be accepted?

Let Them In is a slow-burn supernatural horror novel that blends the chilling modern legend of the Black-Eyed Children with the atmospheric gothic soul of Eureka Springs. It is a story about the thin places between worlds, the dangerous courtesy of saying yes, and the ancient rule that some visitors can only enter when you open the door yourself.

Whatever you do... do not let them in.
